Supernatural creatures are in or out ?

I heard recently that some valid artist decreted that "now angels/vampires/etc... are old news". Meaning an old, outdated and surpassed subject.

This made me ponder if I, personally, really want to credit such an affirmation or not.

After pondering, my consideration is that as far as I'm concerned :

1-I love supernatural /mythological creatures, I've always loved them so far and I'm not yet bored to paint them NOR to see other artists depicting them.

2-It might be "old news" now, but since I began representing such themes some 20 years ago, I must have been both "ahead", at pace, and outdated, if what has been hinted is true (perhaps it's not! what's your opinion?) but I guess since that's what I've always been doing, I'll be excused from the obligement of following trends and being original/different/unique at any price, as a primary value for my artistic activity ^_^

3-Actually, what I try to paint are subjects which are as "out-of-time" as possible, because I don't feel called to represent things which change with time, or which must be up-to-date or "new" or "different" or trendy. I love tradition, and mythological creatures have always been one of the favorite subjects for traditional art.

So my reality is that even though there is (have been?) an existing trend of interest for mythologic and supernatural creatures, my reasons for depicting them are not for me to try to be considered an interesting, new, trendy or original artist. In the contrary it is for a life-long, deep felt personal research into things which seem to have a character of "universality" like symbols, archetypes, legends and myths.

Anyhow, I personally think that this "new" return of interest for such creatures is much deeper than just any modern trend, and will last much longer. I have the sensation that it comes from a need to go back to common roots, which have been severed by the latest tendencies in art. Art has always had a certain well-defined role, which has been lately challenged; I think there is an urge to restore this role, perhaps with a new understanding of it.

"Dawn of the new cosmic day"

I am very happy and hopeful, since I'll be taking part in this contest with it :

Mine is not up yet, I'll wait a few more days--or maybe I'll just try to upload it later?

I think it will be possible to vote for one's fav painting (or other artwork) there. But the online votes will not have any influence on the judges decisions for the actual show, only for an "online satisfaction" ^__^.

Let's cross fingers

Even though my dad, which has been working in the field ages ago, says those are all "fixed" (means they agree with an artist that he/she will win, in exchange of renouncing the money prize, which is quite high).
I'm not sure if I believe this one is like this. In fact I don't because it seems as if the finalist will choose the winner.....Hope is the last to die of course....

A friend of mine also is taking part in it, in the photography section [link] (Marco Grillo).

A fresh start

It is spring now, and I feel the need for a fresh start.

I have been 'away' from art for all this winter (busy with business of other kinds), but I have come back to my work now, happier than ever to be born an 'artist' (don't take it in the sense of a self-compliment, for me it's just a description of a type of human being....the kind living on their own cloud

).

So, to celebrate my thankfulness for being what I am, and having the job I have, I started making a new version of my website, which will take some days I think, and I even purchased a new subscription here at DA, plus I have deleted my previous journal entries which didnt reflect me anymore (they were obsolete, some being 4 years old!).

I hope to be able to paint again soonest now that my ideas are more clear and I have an overload of inspiration waiting to take a concrete form

I have had a print account for a couple of years now, but I never used it before, because I never thought it was worth the stress to find large enough files (lazy)

Now I have put up some pieces for prints.

The fact that this coincides with DA print reform is purely casual, in fact the main reason why I did this is that someone asked me if I could make one of my pieces available for print (Botswana Agate).

Since there is a new system, I uploaded at first some images with the watermark on them, but now I'm in the process of substituting the files (the ones without watermark are, for now, Carpe Noctem, Blue Suspect and Botswana Agate. Tomorrow I will do the rest!).

Hi friends,
It's probably time for a mini update around here ...

OK I'm being as usual very quiet, but not totally sailing on different seas...

I just finished (and posted here) my last Dark Angel, "Shades Of Passion" (model : Hedy www.hedy.it) and I'm about to begin the schetch of the 12th.

Meantime, I burn to begin on the new inspirations/ideas that are waiting for me ....

But I have indeed even more to do than usually, since now I have a new hobby also.....

hehehehehe

I thought to share about it here, since it can be interesting (maybe) for those of you girl/guys who make Stock photos... ^_^

I have started to sell hairpieces (those gorgeous ponytails and up-dos you add with a clip or drawstring to your own hair) and wigs : very beautiful trendy styles, young and much better than costume quality (still synthetic, not human).

I actually sell some on ebay Italy (as a promotion), but mostly to resellers in Italy (I had the chance to become the distributor for a very popular US manufacturer).

So if some of you Stock pettes need to buy some professional quality wigs/hairpieces for your photographies and wish to access them at wholesale/ebay prices, I will gladly arrange this for you!!! (to have an idea the price range is around 20-30 $)

If you happen to be in Oslo, Norway, between the 19th of August and the 3d of September, you might want to pop in Sagene Kulturverksted to view the collective exhibition where, together with other 9 norwegian artists, I was invited to expose 8-9 of my works.

You might even want to check out some of the workshops /conferances happening for the occasion (see the program-in Norwegian).</P>

It was thanks to a 'colleague' painter, Jan Roos (see his myspace profile [link] ), who introduced me to the curator for this arrangement, that I was offered this nice opportunity, and I am very grateful for this.

The initiative has a theme, and the title is "Between here---and the other side".

It's a funny coincidence, because this title has the same meaning as one of my past exhibitions, which was called "The Guardians of the Threshold" so I think that my style is in synthony with this subject ! ^_^ not to speak of the fact that a couple of them directly relate to the Norwegian culture.

I am planning to be in Oslo with my family the 25-26-27th of August.

Even if I will not be there for the opening, I hope that my paintings will arrive in time, since everything was organized at the last second, and they were sent only yesterday!!!

The shipping company told me they should be there on friday, latest monday, this means they should be up latest tuesday, but with some good luck they might be up for the opening too ^_^ (cross fingers!).

I have started to play a little bit with photomanipulations.....it's very funny !!!

Actually I tried long ago to make some digital pieces, but found the process too boring and painful for my hand

(even with a Wacom yes! that is now there covered with dust poor thing!).

So I had forgotten the whole thing. Until recently, where I found myself reading some tutorials, more specifically for photoMANIPULATION (not "digital-art") and suddenly had a desire to try again.
In fact, I'm all the time manipulating pictures in some way, for the most different reasons, and in those years I've learned a lot about Photoshop.

But still I have much to learn...this piece I posted tonight is my first one, so I encourage in-depth critics so I can improve my skills. Thanks !

We have started on a new work with the Company, a restoration job for the owners of the Salvioni Pharmacy in Montalcino.
It takes me an hour to drive there, and an hour to drive back, but it's delightful to work in the silent heart of this peaceful little town with its enchanting view and its cosy cafés, where they serve delicious wine

There are 4 rooms to take care of, with old grottesche and other decorations falling from the walls and ceiling, and we are reconstructing them, trying to keep the old dusty colors intact.

I have also come to Dark Angel #9 and I will now start on a large commissionned painting, the third of the series of 6 for a couple who is making the bedroom like Scarlet O'Hara's ^_^.
